Big Red Catskiing Rossland BC Canada

Medical Evacuation

If you are injured, our guides will call an ambulance to evacuate you to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail BC.  It will typically take 1-2 hours to get you out of the cat ski area, and then a 45 minute drive to hospital.  In most non life-threatening cases, you will be evacuated via ground transport.  If you sustain an injury that is life or limb-threatening, and the weather is good, you may be evacuated by helicopter, which is quicker, but expensive, and in that case you may be air evacuated to Kelowna Hospital.

Be aware that if you are not a BC Resident, BC Ambulance will send you a bill for about $530 for ground ambulance, and at least $2746 for air ambulance, and it is up to the discretion of your guide whether or not you require ambulance evacuation.  If you have not purchased insurance, you can suggest that you don't think that you require an ambulance, but your guide is first aid qualified, and if he/she thinks that you need an ambulance, you will be paying for an ambulance. Your safety is the number one priority of our guides.  Because this decision may be out of your hands, you may wish to purchase travel insurance online - Sanderson Travel Insurance can provide medical evacuation, hospital treatment, and trip cancellation insurance.  Please note that even if you live in Canada, unless you live in BC, you will get an ambulance bill, so it is worth looking into.  Under no circumstance will Big Red Cats be liable for your ambulance bill.

It is up to you to decide whether you want to take the risk of going uninsured.   Historically, we have had to call an ambulance for about two people per year, and one helicopter call in 9 years.  While the probability or requiring an ambulance is about 1 in 1500, and a helicopter is less than one in 15,000, if the person happens to be you, it may be a tough bill to pay.
